This is an elaborate, yet concise history of Indian music. Many people in India regard music from India as the most ancient in the world, but according to the author, no serious attempt has been made to write a chronological history.

Volume One follows the evolution of musical concepts like microtones, murcchanas, ragas, scales, etc. Also included is a history of Indian dancing, hand-poses, rhythm and tempo, as well as philosophical concepts that are essential for the study of Indian music.

Volume two covers the period from the 13th century to the 20th century, explaining the historical evolution of music of not only India, but also Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.

A background in Indian music will help to understand the history. Note that the book was published over 25 years ago. The paper is starting to yellow. Although new, the book shows its age.
