Volume one is an attempt to trace out the evolution of musical materials like microtones, murcchanas, ragas, scales, etc., including dances and hand-poses, rhythm and tempo as well as the philosophical concepts that are essential for the study of Indian music.
Volume two covers the period from the 13th century to the 20th, delineating the historical evolution of music of not only India, but also of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.
The author was at one time the President of Ramakrishna Vedanta Math, Calcutta. He also edited the ten volume Complete Works of Swami Abhedananda.
