Ramakrishna Kathamrita and Ramakrishna: Memoirs of Ramakrishna by

written by "M." (Mahendranath Gupta)
translated by Swami Abhedananda

This is the first English translation of the Gospel of Ramakrishna published in the West. It was translated in 1907 by Swami Abhedananda - who knew Ramakrishna - from the Bengali Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna by "M."

Compared to the Nikhilananda translation brought out many years later, this version is completely different. It is not as polished nor as large a book, but it is still a favorite of many people.

I am a bit disappointed in this book..I do preffer Swami Nikhilanandas' translation, which I have now read several times...
Swami Abhedananda has used the old, or Biblical words Thee and Thou here and there, but not always appropriately in my opinion...I find it off putting...Better use the same "language" all through.
I do, very much like the picture of Sri Ramakrishna in the front of the book..Not a photo, but clearly drawn by an artist and exactly how I imagine Sri Ramakrishna looked when teaching his devotees.
