Upanayana is one of the traditional saṃskāras (rites of passage) that marked the acceptance of a student by a guru and an individual's entrance to a school in Hinduism. This rite of passage is often compared to baptism in Christianity where the aspirant is born again unto spiritual knowledge. Though having survived the centuries, presently neither an awareness of the rite's significance nor a reverent faith in its performance is seen among modern day practitioners.

In this booklet Swami Harshananda's corrects this deficiency and raises Upanayana to its proper status.
