The Prasthana-traya, or three sources, of Vedanta are the Upanishads, the Brahmasutras and the Bhagavad Gita. These ancient texts have been interpreted by each archarya in the light of his own sectarian views. Because of the undoubtedly great stature of Adi Shankara, Advaita Vedanta has often come to mean the philosophy as propounded by Shankara.

In an effort to see what the original source tells us, Dr. Singh interprets the philosophy of Vedanta strictly from a reading of the Upanishads. According to Dr. Singh:

All have admitted that it is the Upanishads which constitute Vedanta. Vedanto nama Upanishad is the dictum that is respected by all.
