In the United States, we  at the Vedanta Society don't for the most part go into Hatha Yoga and asanas. The problem is that people become fixated with Hatha yoga and forget the spiritual end. The original purpose of Hatha yoga is to have a healthy body strong enough for spiritual practice. The regular practice of Yogic Postures helps one to attain good physical health. Asanas are one of the preliminary steps of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali of the 8 steps for the physical, mental, moral and spiritual well-being of a person as a whole.
