Sri Sri Ramakrishna Kathamrita

by M. (Mahendranath Gupta)
translated by Dharm Pal Gupta

This book is a word-by-word translation of the original Bengali Edition of the Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna.

It contains the dialogues of the Bengali saint Ramakrishna written with almost stenographic accuracy. This edition is different translation of the Swami Nikhilananda Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna which was published in the forties and showed the restraint of that era.

The new Volume 4 is now available. The final Volume 5 should come out in the later part of 2009.

If you have read the Nikhilananda version, this translation will seem like a new Gospel.

The author, known as "M," was a disciple of The Hindu saint Sri Ramakrishna. He is famous for his role in taking down the teachings of Ramakrishna through the last years of his life.

I don't mind the translation of the Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna edited by Swami Nikhilananda, but it seems to me to be a bit too smooth. Ramakrishna almost comes across as a highly educated intellectual instead of the simple country person he was.

This series of Sri Sri Ramakrishna Kathamritta is not censored. The translation is what you would see in the original Bengali. Swami Nikhilananda had to omit parts of his translation since they were offensive to some people in the US in the forties.

The result is a delightful, often funny story of a wonderful saint. You can really get a feel for his personality and depth of spirituality. Definitely get the books.
