Saint Sara: The Life of Sara Chapman Bull: The American Mother of Sw. Vivekananda

by Pravrajika Prabhuddaprana

This is the biography of an amazing woman. Almost unknown until now, Sara Bull was a major player in the early days of our movement. It was Sara Bull who helped Swami Vivekananda and his fellow brother monks when they lectured in the US.

She arranged for Vivekananda to speak at Harvard, introduced him to many major college professors, and helped Vivekananda handle the money. She also financed out of her own pocket many different projects and speakers, including the early American swamis.

There are many stories to tell that give a human side not only of our history, but of what it was like to know Swami Vivekananda and Swami Saradananda, later the author of Sri Ramakrishna: The Great Master. Many photos.

This is a profound study and an interesting story. Well written. My thanks to the author for her research and publication. Very important biography of this loving, fascinating woman who was graced to be in the company of Swami Vivekananda. I'm very grateful for this work.

This is an important book for any student or admirer of Swami Vivekananda and his great work in the West. I am still gratefully reading it and enjoying it very much, especially appreciating the glimpses of Vivekananda's western disciples and his direct service to them that it affords. However, in many parts, it reads like a manuscript that was rushed into print before its time--or like notes for a book, rather than the finished product. It's to be hoped that before it goes into a second printing, it will be thoroughly edited. There are oddly speculative sentences that suggest the author was wanting to do more research on the idea expressed, but ran out of time. There are also typos, missing words, entire sentences that don't make sense, and paragraphs that go nowhere. Without such an edit, this book does not fully honor the great tradition of Ramakrishna and Vivekananda and their enormously talented and devoted biographers, Christopher Isherwood and Marie Louise Burke.
