The author kept a diary to describe her experiences in meditation and her meetings with Swami Prabhavananda, then the head of the Vedanta Society of Southern California.
The book was published at the encouragement of Swami Swahananda, current head of the Vedanta Society. (The author passed away some years ago).
When first published, many people were inspired about the story of a householder who achieved such spiritual experiences. The book quietly went out of print, but an excerpt in Yoga International generated such an enthusiastic response that the book was reprinted.
From the preface:
I did not always believe in God. I was not even interested in believing. But I did want, with a terrible longing and restlessness, to find a meaning in life, a purpose behind it, a direction for it, of truth ....And one day, when my soul was open and receptive, it was suddenly charged through and through by something shocking, galvanic, almost frighteningly vibrant, was suddenly flooded, irradiated by something inxexplicable and beautiful and altogether overwhelming. I had not been looking for God. But to convey the impressive magnitude of my soul's experience, I found only one word - God. It was wrung from my lips and I said it aloud, "God!"
An inspiring and intimate spiritual journal by a most remarkable woman.
