Bhagavata Mahapurana (2-vol.set) - English only

translated by C.L. Goswami & M.A. Shastri

Our most popular translation of the Bhagavata Mahapurana is this, the Gita Press edition. The larger edition has both Sanskrit and English. The smaller edition is cheaper with an English only translation. The book includes 15 color plates see in the larger edition.

Unless you know Sanskrit, there's no need to get the larger edition.

(retail only) $24.95
1564 pages, 2-volume set large Indian hardbacks

  Okay, let's be real.
I'm never going to learn Sanskrit, so this version of the BHAGAVATA MAHAPURANA in just the English is perfect for me.
I also find it reassuring that The Vedanta Society sells this edition from The Gita Press. One of the best ways I use to find frauds is that they will only sell THEIR stuff to you. The Vedanta Society is promoting this 2 volume set for it's MERITS, and not for what they rake in.
You get 2 books the size and heft of Book-of-the-Month editions. It has the same kind of thin crisp white paper you see in hotel Gideon Bibles.
I like that. You know it's going to stand up to a lifetime of underlining and highlighting and just plain reading and study.
There's even an attached orange bookmark to keep your place. The jackets are attached to the inside of the front cover. The illustrations are first rate
In short, this is an incredible deal for 25 bucks.
The translation itself? You see words like 'desperado' and 'generalissimo' being used. We are becoming a more interconnected, united culture every day.
Remember that quote from Thoreau about 'bathing his intellect' in the Bhagavad Gita? Reading this version of the BHAGAVATA MAHAPURANA brings that emotion back.
It's like the first time you felt the breathless awe of the Bhagavad Gita.
You are knocked off your feet by the beauty and sweep and power and GOODNESS of this epic. You are reassured there is a God who loves you and is bigger then time, space, or your problems.
Then you'll start to compare this version with Prabhavanda's THE WISDOM OF GOD that the Vedanta Society sells to see where they made their cuts, how and what they summarized.
That's a learning curve in itself.
THE WISDOM OF GOD you can take with you and read bits of when you need to...then and there... the 2 vol. BHAGAVATA MAHAPURANA is what you read when you want that immersion from all 8 volumes.
Enjoy both.
